East Palo Alto Tutors

A teen service group partnered with Interact District 5170 dedicated to empowering and improving the academic performance of the East Palo Alto youth.

The Challenge

In East Palo Alto

  • 77% of students are economically disadvantaged

  • 34% of East Palo Alto’s 25+ aged residents do not have a high school diploma

In EPA Public Middle Schools

  • 5% of students are proficient in Math (State Average is 35%)

  • 10% of students are proficient in English (State Average is 47%)

As a result of the economic struggles of student households and glaring reality of severe academic under- performance, the presence of free, personalized, and caring tutoring is essential.

Our Impact

2-3 Letter Grade Improvements

Initially, many students start with F letter grades. Following long-term tutoring, they improve by 2-3 letters to Cs and Bs.

40+ Tutors, 1000+ Hours

With our high tutor and low student counts, we can ensure high quality of learning and maximize potential for change.

Increased Subject Proficiency

With our emphasis on math and english tutoring, students are equipped with a strong foundation for future subjects and basics to succeed in society.

Community Events

Our events foster growth between tutors, students, and members of the community, contributing to further positive relationships and real-world changes.

$1000+ Raised

Unfortunately, many of our students have lost their chargers and lack computer technology, impeding our sessions’ quality. Through multiple bake sales and door-to-door fundraising, we’ve been able to subsidize our students’ tech, improving tutoring.
