East Palo Alto (EPA) Tutors is a tight-knit community service group consisting of high school students from Palo Alto and nearby towns that provides comprehensive and personalized tutoring for East Palo Alto students. In 2023, Harriette Huang, a 6th grade math teacher at Ravenswood Middle School, started recruiting a group of tutors to help her students. Initially, her tutors simply reported to her and barely knew one another. This created both a surplus of work for Ms. Huang and a lack of team connection amongst the tutors. Thus, Ms. Huang and Jason Luo, her first tutor, worked together to connect the group and amplify support for students through creating an official service group. The group observed much more cohesion and organization internally, as well as not only academic improvements with students, but more motivated mindsets. Now with long-term tutoring, our team is committed to helping the youth of EPA see fun in learning.
